Impi Linux is currently putting the final touches to an enterprise back-end offering called Impi Linux Enterprise Server 2007. We are currently developing Impi Linux Enterprise Server in partnership with some of our most trusted and valued clients. Impi Linux Enterprise Server features file and print services, Groupware, an optional document management system, backup and monitoring services, all integrated with LDAP directory services.

We have expanded our desktop offerings to include “Business Class” versions for OEM and home users as well as corporate users, over and above our “Premier Class” custom distributions.

Ubuntu For Business

Ubuntu is undoubtedly one of the most popular Linux distributions ever. With such popularity many organisations have begun considering or adopting Ubuntu as the platform to run their IT operations. Impi Linux offers services, support and add-on products which can fast-track the adoption of Ubuntu in any organisation.

Impi Linux does not compete with Ubuntu. Rather, it optimises Ubuntu by offering services such as the Impi Linux SOS (software optimisation subscription) service. Impi also offers advanced customisation services, migration, change management, training and consulting, facilitation and services.

Our products are focused on enhancing the extensive software stack that is already built into in Ubuntu. These include Groupware, systems management, provisioning, legacy integration to back-end systems such as Windows directory services and Groupware.

About Us

Impi Linux was South Africa's first desktop Linux distribution. It was created in 2001 by the Gauteng Linux User Group (GLUG).

Today it develops, releases, supports and maintains the ImpiLinux operating system and is an official representative of Ubuntu and an official Ubuntu support provider in Africa.

Primarily run, developed and funded by volunteers in its early days, the Impi Linux project became a (Pty) Ltd in March 2005, a step that marked its transition from project to serious player in the local OSS market.

In August that year, Mark Shuttleworth and Impi Linux announced a deal that would see Ubuntu and Impi joining forces to tackle the SADC region.

Impi Linux is today owned by Shuttleworth's HBD Business Holdings (65%), Khuselo Investments (Pty) Ltd (10%) and several minor shareholders (5%). The remaining 20% of the shares in the entity have been earmarked for BEE, in the form of The Impi Linux BEE Share Trust, which will disburse shares to previously disadvantaged employees over time.

Impi Linux is a commercial Ubuntu representative in the region, and the ImpiLinux distribution is based on Ubuntu.

People

Pumla Fundiswa Radebe - Chairperson Radebe specialises in social analysis, project planning and management, and has more than 20 years experience at local and regional government level. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from the University of Fort Hare, a Certificate in Municipal Management from Rand Afrikaans University and a Certificate in Project Management from Pretoria Technikon. Radebe is a Managing Partner of Bungane Development Consultants (a Social Development, Project Planning and Management, and Transport Planning Consultancy), the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Johannesburg City Parks, President of the Institute of Environment Recreation Management (Africa) as well as a member of the International Federation for Parks and Recreation Administration. She is a member of the South African Council for the Landscape Architectural Profession, an examiner on the Films and Publications Board and a board member of the Independent Development Trust. Sonwabo Eddie Funde M.Sc - Director Funde is a qualified Electrical Engineer, and holds a Master of Science degree from the St Petersburg Polytechnical Institute (formerly Leningrad Polytechnical Institute). He is currently the Executive Chairman of Kemilinks International (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd, a director of Murray and Roberts Holdings Limited, a director of Eskom Holdings Limited, Acting Chair of the Board of Directors if the National Institute for Economic Policy (NIEP), a member of the Board of Trustees of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), Chairperson of the TW Kambule Education, Training and Development Trust, a member of the Advisory Council of the Monash University in South Africa and has recently been appointed as Chairman of the SABC. He is a Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential National Commission on Information Society and Development, the founder President of the South African Communications Forum (SACF) and has served as Deputy Chairman of the South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, director of the Facilitation Portfolio of the IDT, Executive Director of SARDET, and as a director of Denel. Gary Fortuin Educated in Progress College in Rosebank, Cape Town, Fortuin has a broad range of ICT experience garnered at organisations like Syfrets, Open Technology Solutions, Denel Informatics, Sourcecom and Xantium. In 1998 he concluded a deal with the South African Civil Aviation Authority to implement an entirely new IT network, including hardware, software, networking, training and project management. In 1999, he concluded one of the largest Microsoft Enterprise licensing deals in Africa (in excess of R300m) with the Gauteng Provincial Government, and in 2001 was involved in securing the sole HP hardware deal for the Gauteng Online (GOL) project.

Employment Opportunities

Project Manager

We are looking for a project manager with the relevant qualification, 2 - 3 years experience in a project management position within an IT environment, solid knowledge of Linux and Open Source Software technology and proven track record of running projects.

You will be responsible for managing small to large sized projects, liaising with both the internal and external stakeholders with regards to progress of the projects, playing a key role in the proactive management of client relationships, engagement economics (i.e analysis and delivery of costs, receivables management), meeting service delivery and corporate goals, and other daily activities.
